The proposed closure of Stubbington Study Centre has sparked worries among locals, with many rallying to save the beloved facility.
Stubbington: Over 7,600 people have signed a petition against Hampshire County Council’s plan to close the study centre and replace it with a children’s home.
This new facility aims to provide a safe space for up to 10 vulnerable kids from Hampshire and beyond. But many locals feel the study centre is too valuable to lose.
Fareham Borough Council, which is run by Conservatives, called the centre a “well-attended” and “much-loved” spot that has been helping kids for nearly 90 years.
Cllr Simon Martin, the council’s executive leader, expressed his surprise at the closure proposal. He understands the need for more specialist care but believes it shouldn’t come at the expense of this community hub.
He plans to push Hampshire County Council to find another location for the new facility to protect the study centre’s future. He’s also looking to meet with the council’s cabinet member to share his concerns.
Before any changes can happen, the site will need planning permission. The planning committee will take a close look at the application if it comes through.
If the closure goes ahead, the Stubbington Study Centre will shut its doors in September 2025. That means schools and other groups will have to find new places to hold their activities.
In the meantime, locals have until February 10 to voice their opinions through an online form on the county council’s website or by emailing directly.
