A petition to save Stubbington Study Centre has gained 13,000 signatures as community support grows.
Fareham: Parents and headteachers are rallying to save the Stubbington Study Centre. This place has educated kids for 90 years and serves over 6,500 people each year.
Hampshire County Council wants to close it to focus on residential care for vulnerable children. This decision has sparked a lot of concern in the community.
Southampton Children’s Mayor Freya Orendecki is also involved. She called the closure plans ‘devastating’ and shared her own fond memories of the centre.
Freya recalled her Year 5 trip to Stubbington. She said it was unforgettable and fun, filled with wildlife learning and games.
She emphasized how cheerful and enjoyable the centre is, mentioning the amazing food too. Freya believes it offers great opportunities for kids to learn about wildlife.
Three former county council inspectors have also written to the council. They have over 40 years of combined experience and want the council to explore other options before closing Stubbington.
They pointed out that significant investments in the centre over the past 12 years would be wasted if it closes. The centre has expanded its offerings for young people, enhancing both residential and day-use opportunities.
Hampshire County Council has suggested 100 other sites for school trips. The public consultation is open until February 10.
