Mary Smart celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends, sharing her wisdom and joy on this special occasion
Sutton Scotney: Mary Smart, a lovely lady from Gratton Close, just hit the big 100 on January 13. She celebrated with her family at The Victoria Hall last Saturday.
Mary comes from a big family herself, being one of nine kids. She raised six children, and now she’s got a whopping 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandkids. Talk about a full house!
Her daughter Judith shared how special it is to have four generations together for the celebration. Mary reflected on how much life has changed since her younger days, especially since the war.
She said, “I’ve just taken life as it comes, you know what I mean? And I won’t give in.” Her advice for a long life? “Be polite and nice to people.”
Mary loves her family and enjoys her weekly trips to the hairdresser, thanks to one of her daughters. She’s all about staying young at heart.
She reminisced about her time in the Women’s Land Army, where she learned to drive a tractor and helped care for pigs. “I didn’t expect all this, but it’s lovely – I do appreciate it,” she said with a smile.
When asked about her secret to staying spry, Mary simply replied, “I never give in.” She also mentioned her motto: “There’s no fun in being good.”
