Swindon: The annual Pitha Utshob, or Traditional Bengali Winter Cake Festival, took place at the Punjabi Community Centre on January 19. It was a lively afternoon filled with delicious food and cultural celebration.

About 400 locals gathered to enjoy a variety of homemade pitha, which are traditional foods from the Bangladeshi region. Ashiq Rahman, one of the organizers, shared how this festival is a great way to celebrate Bengali culture.

He mentioned that Bengalis are known for their love of fun, and you could really feel that joy at the festival. The event celebrates the harvest season, especially the new rice, which is a big deal in Bangladesh.

Local families put in a lot of effort to make different types of traditional cakes. It’s all about love and laughter, with many people coming together to create these treats.

Some organizers were up late preparing for the feast, and it was clear that everyone was excited. Most of the pithas are made with rice flour, and the handmade clay pots added a special touch.

Alongside the pithas, there were other traditional dishes, including various vegetable mash-ups from Bangladesh and South Asia. The festival also featured a cultural program where younger folks performed plays, songs, and dances.

Ashiq emphasized how the festival brings the community together, making everyone feel included and connected to their roots. It’s a nostalgic experience that reminds many of home.

Our reporter got to taste some of the amazing food, and each dish had its own unique flavor. The Nakshi pitha stood out with its beautiful design and sweet, soft texture.

For those who prefer savory, the shingara, shaped like a samosa and filled with meat and veggies, was a hit too. Around 80 families contributed their homemade pithas, showcasing the variety within the Bengali community.

Ashiq noted that some recipes are passed down through generations, making certain pithas unique to specific families or regions.
