Teignmouth Town Council is on the lookout for a new councillor after Steve Walsh stepped down from his position.
Teignmouth: So, here’s the scoop. Teignmouth Town Council is searching for a new councillor since Steve Walsh decided to resign. He represented the Teignmouth Central Ward and officially stepped down on December 22.
Walsh mentioned that he felt his skills would be better used elsewhere. He described local government as a huge beast and admitted he struggled to make any real changes. He expressed gratitude to those who voted for him and apologized for not being able to continue serving them.
This isn’t the first resignation since the May 2023 elections; Walsh is actually the second councillor to leave. The council put out a notice about the vacancy on January 6, giving locals 14 days to request a by-election.
To trigger a by-election, they need ten eligible voters to write to the Proper Officer at Forde House in Newton Abbot. If that doesn’t happen, the council will look for people to co-opt into the role, which will be decided in a public meeting.
Last summer, Walsh tried to connect with the community through informal walking surgeries. He thought it was a nicer way to chat with folks and be more visible around town. He also got involved in beach cleans and other local projects, but he was hesitant about checking the council’s bank reconciliations due to liability concerns.
