Somerset: The Castle School has been making waves since it opened in 1968. It’s impressive how this school keeps hitting high marks year after year.

Recently, the Head of School, Jamie Wordsworth, gave the Somerset County Gazette a peek behind the curtain. He shared what makes the school tick and why it’s so successful.

Jamie believes the school’s mission—helping every child achieve, belong, and participate—plays a huge role in its long-standing success. He’s proud of how they prepare students to contribute positively to society.

When it comes to exams, The Castle School shines. In 2024, over half of the students scored grade 5 or higher in GCSE English and Maths. That’s no small feat!

But it’s not just about grades. The school fosters a strong sense of community, thanks in part to its House System, which encourages friendly competition among students.

Students like Campbell appreciate the variety of sports available, including archery. It’s all about trying new things and having fun.

Personal development is also a big focus. Jamie mentioned that since the pandemic, they’ve worked hard to ensure students have impactful growth opportunities. They want everyone to feel included and supported.

There are loads of chances for students to take on leadership roles and prepare for college. Maria, a Year 11 student, said that the school really values what students have to say.

Extracurricular activities are plentiful, with trips and clubs that range from public speaking to photography. Louie feels lucky to have such supportive staff who create opportunities for friendship and growth.

Respect is key at The Castle School. Desiree, another Year 11 student, noted that clear boundaries help everyone understand expectations. Teachers are dedicated to helping students succeed.

In its latest Ofsted inspection, The Castle School received an ‘Outstanding’ rating across the board. The report highlighted the warm and friendly atmosphere that permeates the school.

Students like Emily feel safe and supported, while Arthur appreciates the school’s inclusivity. It’s a place where everyone can be themselves.

As Jamie wrapped up the visit, he expressed pride in the students and gratitude for the staff’s commitment. Their teamwork with families is crucial for helping students reach their full potential.

The Castle School is part of the Blackdown Education Partnership, which means its success can inspire other schools in the area. It’s a win-win for everyone!
