A nostalgic look back at the Royal Restaurant, a beloved Liverpool venue.
Located at 68 Hanover Street, this place was a favorite for many. It opened its doors on October 19, 1942, serving up delicious continental cuisine and afternoon teas.
Over the years, it welcomed countless musicians and performers, making it a lively spot. After a big renovation, it transformed into a vibrant venue, and old photos show just how lively it was back then.
In December 1958, the restaurant had a stunning dining room with a dance floor and a band platform. You could even spot the head chef and his team in those pictures.
The Liverpool ECHO once reported on a new cabaret venture at the restaurant, highlighting its major makeover. The owner was determined to bring top-notch talent to the stage, paying up to £200 a week for the best performers.
Inside, it was all about style, with red carpets and gold-framed mirrors. The main dining area could seat 200 guests, plus a private room for smaller gatherings.
As the years went by, the Royal Restaurant continued to thrive, offering cabaret shows and special events. But by December 1974, it sadly closed its doors for good.
Today, O’Neill’s and Popworld occupy the space, but many locals still fondly remember the Royal Restaurant and the memories made there.
