Former Prime Minister Theresa May spoke in Cambridge, urging support for a new anti-slavery charter aimed at combating modern slavery.
May emphasized the importance of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough-wide modern-day slavery charter. She pointed out that modern slavery is a major problem today, affecting millions worldwide. The goal is for Cambridgeshire to lead the way in eradicating this issue.
The statistics are alarming. Recent figures show that potential victims of modern slavery in the UK are at an all-time high. Between July and September last year, over 4,700 potential victims were reported, marking a significant increase. Most of these referrals were UK nationals, with a notable number of children among them.
The conference brought together various experts, including legal professionals and local business leaders, all committed to fighting this issue. High Sheriff David Way described modern slavery as a “terrible evil” and stressed the role businesses play in combating it.
May expressed her gratitude for the conference and praised the businesses for their proactive stance against modern slavery. She hopes that Cambridgeshire’s efforts will inspire others to take similar actions. Jonathan Agar, CEO of Birketts, echoed her sentiments, highlighting the importance of the charter in addressing this serious issue.
