Discover unique whisky and food pairings at Edinburgh’s top spots this Burns Night
Edinburgh: Burns Night is a great time to enjoy whisky and food pairings. At 1802 Lounge & Grill, I had haggis with Glenmorangie 10-Year-Old. The creamy whisky balanced the spices in the haggis perfectly.
While I prefer fruity or creamy whiskies, feel free to experiment. Pairing whisky with chocolate or cheese is also a classic choice.
I attended a cheese and whisky tasting at IJ Mellis Cheese Lounge. They featured whiskies from Angus Dundee Distillers. I paired Blackmount goat’s cheese with Glencadam Reserve de Porto Branco. The cheese made the whisky sweeter, while the whisky added spice to the cheese.
For a fun pairing, try contrasting flavors. A smoky whisky can go well with a smoky cheese, or even a creamy blue cheese.
Sometimes, it’s nice to just sip whisky without overthinking it. I enjoyed Ardfern’s Burns Night tasting menu with Blind Summit. We started with a refreshing whisky ginger highball.
We tasted two drams: a fruity Benriach and a smoky Caol Ila. Each whisky complemented different courses beautifully. The mushroom parfait paired well with Caol Ila, while the chocolate doughnut matched nicely with Benriach.
Recommendation of the Week
This week, I recommend the Blind Summit nine-year-old Caol Ila. It has a great balance of smoke and fruitiness. I enjoyed it at Ardfern by the fire on a chilly evening.
