Torfaen Council will restore 30 mph on eight roads following Wales’ 20 mph limit. 36 roads kept 30 mph after a trial, now expanding.
Wales says fewer people died after the change. They had about 100 fewer deaths/injuries on roads. These roads had 20 or 30 mph limits. This data compares the year before to the year after.
The Welsh government told people to talk to councils. Councils can change speed limits. This happened after many people disliked the new limit. Torfaen Council listened to feedback, and they’ll restore the 30 mph limit on eight roads.
Traffic orders will soon be published for these roads. The roads include Newport Road and Estate Road as well as A4043 north from Pontypool and New Road. Some other roads are Usk Road, Riverside, Turnpike Road, and Caerleon Road.
Before the 20 mph limit, Torfaen kept 30 mph at 36 spots. They assessed the roads using local factors. These factors included housing and community places. They also looked at walking and cycling routes.
They used orders to keep the 30 mph limit. This allowed them to gather feedback on it. The council wanted to see if it should stay. One spokesperson said the 36 roads keep 30 mph because there was no negative feedback about it. Eight more roads will get 30 mph limits.
Traffic orders are needed to change speed limits. People can share their thoughts before any change.
