Storm Éowyn is bringing strong winds and heavy rain, raising tornado concerns in South Wales this Friday
Cardiff: The Met Office has put out red, amber, and yellow warnings for the UK due to Storm Éowyn. It’s expected to bring some wild weather.
Winds could hit up to 100mph in certain areas, which is pretty intense. This could lead to tricky driving, power cuts, and even some damage to buildings.
In South Wales, there are two yellow warnings today—one for heavy rain and flooding, and the other because of the storm itself.
Now, it looks like the strong winds might even lead to possible tornadoes in parts of South Wales, including Newport, Monmouthshire, and Cardiff.
A forecast map shows a 15% chance of a tornado event in the lower areas of South Wales, extending into Bristol and southern England.
So, there’s a 15% chance of a tornado hitting South Wales today or tomorrow. The forecast also mentions a 5% chance for the rest of Wales.
According to the European Storm Forecast Experiment, they’ve issued a level 2 warning mainly for severe wind gusts, with a few tornadoes possibly forming.
They noted that the main risk seems to be along a line from Bristol to London, where conditions are just right for tornadoes.
They explained that an active cold front is expected to pass through during the day, which could create the right conditions for some serious weather.
With all this wind and moisture in the air, there’s a chance for rotating updrafts, which could lead to tornadoes and severe gusts.
