Kings Langley: Chris Collins was a true genius in boat building. He gained fame for his work on the Ovaltine Boat, featured in a BBC documentary called “The Importance of Being Albert.”
Starting in the 1980s, Chris had no formal training but had a natural talent for crafting boats. His dedication earned him the Ken Keay award for restoring Albert.
Tim Woodbridge, a friend for over 30 years, praised Chris’s incredible skills and determination. He said Chris had a unique vision and a strong will to do things his way.
Chris’s work on Albert also led to the creation of the Batchworth Lock Canal Centre in Rickmansworth, where kids often visit to see another boat he saved.
His restoration efforts were highlighted in the Watford Observer back in 1989, showcasing the ambitious project of rebuilding the 1920s vessel.
Tim admired Chris’s self-taught abilities, noting that he started as a panel beater and gained national recognition for his work on Albert and other historic boats.
“Chris’s genius saved boats that would have been lost without his dedication,” Tim shared, reflecting on his friend’s impact.
In his free time, Chris enjoyed restoring classic cars and lived a simple life, as Tim described it.
He met his wife Carol when they were just 20, and she was his rock during tough times. They had two children, Louise and Adam, and Chris cherished his grandchildren, Jesse-James and Ruby-Rae.
Later in life, he grew amazing vegetables at his allotment, showing his love for nature.
Sadly, after a brave fight with cancer, Chris passed away at 68, leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship and love.
