Worcester: A new exhibition is coming to The Commandery, and it sounds super interesting! Opening on February 1, it’ll take you back to 1890, showcasing what life was like back then.

This exhibition highlights a time when The Commandery served as a school for blind boys. The area where the exhibition is set has a rich history, featuring various traders, including bootmakers.

Victorian England was a time of great change, with an industrial boom that created wealth for some while leaving others behind. The exhibition dives into the lives of fictional residents of Wyldgate Lane, exploring their joys and struggles.

As you stroll down Wyldgate Lane, you’ll get a glimpse into the darker aspects of Victorian life, from childhood to funerals, and everything in between. It’s a real eye-opener!

Visitors can even dress up in Victorian costumes, try being a chimney sweep, or pull a pint at the Victorian ‘Angel’ pub. How fun is that?

There will be original items on display, like police uniforms, chemist’s bottles, and even a funeral bier. It’s a unique chance to see history up close.

While Wyldgate Lane is fictional, it’s inspired by real stories from the streets around The Commandery. To kick off the exhibition, you can meet a Victorian surgeon who’ll share tales of illnesses and remedies from that era.

He’ll show how Victorians made their medicines and display some fascinating medical tools. The Commandery itself has a rich history, having served many roles over the years, including a hospital and a Royalist headquarters during the English Civil War.

Rachel Robinson, the Commandery Manager, expressed excitement about the exhibition, saying it brings to life amazing stories from the past. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the conditions in Victorian Worcester.

Entry to the exhibition is included with regular admission, and locals with a season ticket or Worcester Residents’ pass can visit for free. If you don’t have a pass yet, you can grab one during your visit and enjoy free entry for the rest of the year!

The exhibition is funded by The Towns Fund, making it a fantastic addition to Worcester’s cultural offerings.
