Waitrose is bringing back its popular free drink offer for shoppers, allowing them to enjoy a complimentary beverage without making a purchase
London: Waitrose is making a comeback with a free drink offer that shoppers loved. Starting January 27, if you’re a MyWaitrose member and bring your own reusable cup, you can grab a free hot drink every day, no purchase necessary.
This perk, which includes options like americano, cappuccino, latte, or tea, was first launched back in 2013. But in 2017, they changed the rules, limiting it to customers who had shopped in-store. Then, during the pandemic, it was completely dropped. Now, under new leadership, they’re bringing it back.
A spokesperson mentioned that many customers prefer to enjoy their coffee before or during shopping, so they’re just making it easier for everyone. It seems like a lot of folks were already doing this, so it’s more of a formal update to the rules.
To get your free drink, just make sure you have your reusable cup and are signed up for the MyWaitrose loyalty program, which is free to join online. An email to members confirmed that you can now enjoy your drink without needing to buy anything first.
This change comes after M&S recently surpassed Waitrose in market share, so it looks like they’re trying to win back those middle-class shoppers. The previous chair, Dame Sharon White, had started the process, and now Jason Tarry is continuing the effort.
Interestingly, this free drink offer even caught the attention of politicians back in the day, with some expressing concerns about its impact on small businesses. Waitrose also provides free drinks to police officers as part of a strategy to deter shoplifting, which makes sense for both shoppers and the store.
