Wandsworth locals are voicing their worries about a new student block that could overshadow their homes and disrupt the skyline
The proposal includes 434 student bedrooms on some old industrial land. The plan is to build two ten-story blocks on Armoury Way. Sounds massive, right?
These new digs would have a mix of cluster apartments and studios, plus some rooftop gardens. One block is even set to have shops on the ground and first floors.
This site used to be part of the old gasworks, which shut down in 2019. The developers say they’ll add some parking spaces and plant 66 new trees, which is nice.
But locals are worried about how tall these buildings will be. They’ve sent letters to the council expressing their concerns, especially about the extra pressure on Wandsworth Town station.
One resident mentioned that the new buildings would block light and privacy, saying it would really change their living experience. Another pointed out that more people would mean more congestion, which isn’t great for anyone.
The developers argue that this area needs more student housing because there’s a big demand for it. They believe the location is perfect since it’s close to several universities.
Now, the council will take some time to decide what to do with this proposal.
