Cambridge drivers ignoring Mill Road bridge bus gate rules will soon get warning notices as fines are set to start next month
Cambridge: Drivers who don’t follow the Mill Road bridge bus gate rules will soon get warning notices. The council announced this change to help everyone adjust before fines start next month.
The bus gate restrictions began in December. The council wanted to give drivers time to adapt. Now, they’re moving to the next step, where non-exempt drivers will receive warnings.
Cllr Neil Shailer mentioned that they’ve contacted over 360 local care providers about exemptions for care workers. They received positive feedback and hope this helps everyone adjust to the new rules.
Since December, a Traffic Regulation Order has been in place. Until the end of January, non-exempt drivers only received warnings. Civil parking enforcement officers monitored the bridge during this time.
Starting February 3, the warning period continues. Non-exempt drivers will get notices, while exempt drivers are encouraged to register online before fines begin in March.
The bus gate work finished in November, but there were issues with vandalized cameras. Protests also delayed the project, forcing contractors to work during the day instead of at night.
The restrictions mean only buses, emergency vehicles, taxis, and registered Blue Badge holders can use the bridge. This aims to improve air quality and safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
Blue Badge holders can register up to two vehicles for exemption online. They need to provide necessary paperwork to complete the registration.
More details about exemptions and guidance are available on the council’s website. The restrictions were approved after a consultation showed most people supported the changes.
Previously, a Traffic Regulation Order was canceled due to a protest challenge. Another challenge is pending from the Friends of Mill Road Bridge 2 group, questioning the council’s reasons for the order.
