Concerns rise over a proposed battery site in Cockenzie, with worries about potential acid leaks and fire risks near residential areas.
One person, Brian Hall, spoke at a council meeting, stating the batteries could release dangerous acid which could cause harm if a disaster occurred. He mentioned fires at battery sites in California as examples of the potential dangers.
The facility would have many battery containers that would store extra power. That power would go to the grid when needed, however councillors raised local worries about the project.
Two community councils also objected, citing safety concerns about the proposed site. One councillor, however, said this site is part of sustainable energy and he doesn’t believe it will cause fires, stating that the technology is safe and improves.
The plan is for land near Cockenzie Power Station. Councillors initially objected to the project, but The Scottish Government will make the final decision, with the council only able to comment or object.
The council’s planning officer talked with the government and they resolved some issues from the initial objection. Officers now suggest no objections to the updated plan, which splits the site into two sections.
One councillor warned against objecting, stating that it would cost money to lose an inquiry. Some councillors still worry about fire safety and they also think the community needs to be involved.
A representative for the project stated that it will have safety plans and the site will have remote monitoring for any problems. The committee voted to not object, but they want fire risks addressed. The council wants to be involved in future talks to make sure the community’s voice is heard.
