Warrington: Councillor Wendy Johnson, the mayor, is rallying everyone to come together for Holocaust Memorial Day on January 27. It’s a day to remember the millions who lost their lives during the Holocaust and other genocides.

This year is special as it marks the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz-Birkenau’s liberation and the 30th anniversary of the Bosnia genocide. The theme is “For a Better Future,” which is a powerful reminder of the lessons we need to learn.

To honor this occasion, folks across the UK will take part in a project called “80 Candles for 80 Years.” It’s all about creating 80 unique candleholders that represent different lives affected by Nazi persecution.

Each candleholder tells a story, whether it’s about Jewish people or others like the Roma, disabled individuals, or the LGBTQ+ community. These will be displayed in a digital exhibition, showcasing the creativity and resilience of our communities.

Councillor Johnson shared, “This Holocaust Memorial Day, we remember the millions of lives lost. The theme reminds us to learn from the past to create a kinder world.”

She also invited everyone to join the “Light the Darkness” campaign. At 8pm on January 27, people are encouraged to light a candle and place it in their window. It’s a simple yet meaningful gesture of hope and remembrance.

This act not only honors those who were murdered but also stands against the prejudice and hatred we still see today. For more details on the Holocaust Memorial Trust, check out their website.
