East Belfast: The welcome packs include a small model of the iconic Harland and Wolff cranes, along with some Tayto crisps. It’s a nice touch that really shows newcomers they’re appreciated.

This initiative is run by the East Belfast Race Relations Network, aiming to make everyone feel at home in the area.

It’s part of a larger project by the East Belfast Community Development Agency, supported by a generous £497,197 grant from The National Lottery Community Fund.

Katy, who’s deeply involved with the East Belfast Community Development Agency, mentioned that the area is becoming more diverse, just like many places in Northern Ireland. She emphasized how crucial it is for everyone to feel welcomed.

“Moving can really mess with your mental health. We realized there’s a need for resources to help people feel supported and welcomed. So, we teamed up with the East Belfast Race Relations Network to create these welcome packs,” she explained.

The packs are for anyone new to East Belfast, whether they’re from another part of the city or even from abroad. It’s the little things that count, and that’s the whole idea behind this initiative.

Each pack comes with a welcome letter and info on local services, like when to put your bins out, and where to find the nearest community center, park, doctor, and shop.

Plus, they include some Tayto crisps and a little ornament of the Harland and Wolff cranes. It’s a personal touch that really makes newcomers feel at home.

One young mother who recently moved to East Belfast shared how stressful moving can be. She was really thankful for the welcome pack.

“It made everything easier, and I’ve connected with Family Support Groups, which has helped me settle in,” she said.

Katy highlighted how important the support from the National Lottery Community Fund has been, not just for the welcome packs but also for helping local organizations collaborate and share resources.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve the packs and will update them based on feedback. Our welcome letter is available in 13 languages and counting,” she added.

“When someone delivers a big yellow box, it’s hard to forget! Those receiving them also get to meet a friendly face. Everyone finds them super useful, and we’ve been thrilled with the response so far.”
