West Suffolk Council is actively seeking tenants for vacant commercial units in Bury St Edmunds’ Old Post Office development
Bury St Edmunds: The council is working hard to fill two empty commercial units. These units are part of the Old Post Office development. They have been vacant since the project finished in March 2023.
West Suffolk Council has hired new agents, Merrifields, to help find tenants. They are exploring options like rent-free periods to attract businesses.
Currently, the council is in talks with a potential tenant. However, they can’t share details yet due to confidentiality.
Cllr Diane Hind mentioned that the retail property market is tough right now. The council is reviewing rental prices and considering incentives to make the units more appealing.
The units are in a ‘shell’ state, meaning they lack flooring, lighting, and plumbing. This setup allows new tenants to customize the space to their needs.
While there have been inquiries for temporary use, the current condition of the units isn’t suitable for that. The council is keeping options open for the future.
The Old Post Office development preserved the historic facade and added 12 apartments above the retail spaces. The council purchased the site for £1.6 million after the Post Office moved in 2017.
Additionally, the council is preparing to find a tenant for another property, the Market Cross. This location will be marketed by Eddisons starting in early February.
Before its recent use, the Market Cross had been empty for six years. It has a rich history, having served various purposes since the 17th century, including as a theatre and art gallery.
