London: Westminster is making it easier to access free WiFi. They’re starting a two-month trial supported by Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan.
The council is testing a new system. It lets residents and visitors connect to various public WiFi networks with just one login.
This service is called Connected London WiFi. It aims to provide easy, free internet access and help reduce digital inequality.
The Labour-run council hopes to expand this network across London with support from the Mayor and other boroughs.
During the trial, QR codes will be available at businesses, public spaces, and cultural spots that already offer free WiFi.
Users can scan the QR code to log in with one profile. Their devices will connect automatically to any participating WiFi network nearby.
The trial covers 50 locations, including public libraries, Berwick Street Market, and Paddington Recreation Ground.
After the trial, the council will explore options to expand the network and improve the login process beyond QR codes.
Geoff Barraclough, a council member, noted that many struggle with mobile connections in busy areas like Oxford Street. Public WiFi can be tricky to access.
He added that Westminster is the first UK council to launch a single sign-on WiFi network across multiple operators, benefiting workers and tourists.
Howard Dawber, London’s deputy mayor, emphasized the importance of reliable internet for everyone. This initiative is a step toward better digital access in the city.
