Whitstable’s beloved fish market is on track to return, with hopes for a reopening between February and April next year after a devastating fire.
The good news? The reconstruction is done, and they’re eyeing a reopening between February and April next year. It’s been a tough road for Elizabeth Bennett and her late husband, who ran the market for years.
Canterbury City Council is working hard to get things back on track. They’ve wrapped up structural repairs and are chatting with tenants about getting the market up and running again.
The fire was a big deal, with dozens of firefighters on the scene. It all started from sparks flying while a worker was grinding near the cockle shed.
Peter Bennett, a local legend, started his fish business back in 1984. He moved it to the harbour in 1990 and opened the fish market in 1994. It’s been a staple for the community ever since.
As the harbour gears up for its busiest year since the pandemic, there are also plans to revamp the cockle shed into new commercial spaces. Plus, the Whitstable Oyster Company is expanding its offerings, which is exciting for locals and visitors alike.
With all these changes, Whitstable is set to shine even brighter in the coming years!
