A proposed wine bar in Barnard Castle faces delays due to noise complaints from neighbors, prompting further assessments before approval.
Morgan Derbyshire, the applicant, believes the wine bar will help revitalize a historic building and support local businesses. He wants to create a cozy spot for people to enjoy wine or coffee without causing disturbances.
During the hearing, some neighbors expressed worries about the impact on their lives. They live close to the proposed bar, which is in a historic property. One neighbor, David Hepburn, mentioned he can hear everything from next door, even sneezes.
Others, like Peter Colley, argued that the area is mostly residential and doesn’t need a bar. He fears it could lead to disorder and trouble for families in the neighborhood.
Mr. Derbyshire defended his plans, saying the Inglenook would be a quiet place, not a loud club. He plans to close earlier than other businesses nearby, which he believes will help avoid any issues.
The council will reconsider the alcohol license later this year. Committee chair Carole Hampson stated they need more information, including a noise assessment, before making a decision.
