Durham: Alice Ambrose-Thurman, who works at Faltec Europe in Sunderland, has been chosen for a key role at Durham Cathedral. She went through a competitive selection process to get this position.

She’ll be officially welcomed as a lay canon during a special Evensong service on January 22. In her new role, she’ll be the canon treasurer and lead the finance committee.

A chartered accountant, Alice also heads the cathedral’s audit and risk committee. Plus, she’s a regular worshipper at Durham Cathedral, so she knows the place well.

The Dean of Durham, Very Revd Dr Philip Plyming, expressed his excitement about her joining the chapter. He believes her finance and governance skills will be a great asset.

Alice mentioned that while automotive manufacturing and church work seem different, both require solid finance and governance knowledge. She’s eager to contribute to the cathedral’s mission.

Her appointment needed approval from the acting bishop of Durham, Rt Revd Sarah Clark, and is part of new governance measures introduced by the Cathedrals Measure 2021.

As part of these changes, the cathedral is now fully registered with the Charity Commission. For more details about Durham Cathedral’s Chapter, check out their website.
