In Londonderry, wreaths were laid to remember RUC officers murdered by the IRA, highlighting their sacrifice and the ongoing impact of the Troubles.
Londonderry: Recently, Gregory Campbell MP and Gary Middleton MLA held a wreath-laying ceremony to remember Sergeant Peter Gilgunn and Constable David Montgomery. These two officers were tragically murdered in an IRA ambush back in 1972.
That year was particularly deadly during the Troubles, with Sergeant Gilgunn, just 26, and Constable Montgomery, only 20, becoming the first RUC officers killed in the city. They were shot while sitting in their car on Creggan Hill.
Gilgunn was a young father, married with an eight-month-old baby, and originally from Belcoo, while Montgomery was single and from east Belfast. It’s heartbreaking to think about their lives cut short.
On that fateful morning, they were on their way to the Rosemount police station when the attack happened. The gunmen had the element of surprise, and sadly, the officers didn’t get a chance to fight back.
Mr. Campbell emphasized the importance of remembering these brave men, especially with the focus often shifting to Bloody Sunday, which occurred just days later. He pointed out that both events involved the same type of weapon, a Thompson sub-machine gun.
He also reminded everyone that these murders reflect the harsh realities of the Troubles and the risks faced by those in law enforcement. It’s crucial that we don’t forget their sacrifice.
Gary Middleton added that this ceremony was a chance to honor their courage and ensure their story isn’t lost amid other historical events. Reflecting on this anniversary is vital as we consider the ongoing impact of terrorism and the need for peace.
