Wrexham is buzzing as over 1,800 runners prepare for the Village Bakery Half Marathon, a community event with a sweet twist
Wrexham: The Village Bakery Half Marathon is set to be a big deal this year. More than 1,800 runners are joining in, and it’s exciting to see so many locals participating for the first time.
The race kicks off on Sunday, February 16, starting and finishing at the Wrexham Industrial Estate. The finish line is on Oak Road, right by the old BICC club.
Everyone who crosses the finish line will snag a medal and some tasty treats from the bakery. Think Welsh cakes, sourdough crumpets, and even gluten-free muffins for those who need them.
Mike Harrington from Run Cheshire, who organizes the event, shared how awesome it is to have the Village Bakery’s support. It’s been a key part of the race since the beginning.
He mentioned that after the race, people love to share photos of themselves enjoying those famous Welsh cakes. It’s become a fun tradition!
The race was started by Peter Norman, a local legend who passed away in 2023. He was a maintenance worker at the Village Bakery and played a huge role in getting the race off the ground.
Peter only started running in his 50s but went on to win three world triathlon titles. His passion helped make the half marathon a success.
Mike also pointed out that this event isn’t just about running; it’s about bringing the community together. This year, they’re partnering with the Wrexham Food Bank to collect donations on race day.
Despite the recent fame Wrexham has gained thanks to Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, there are still food insecurity issues in the area, and they want to help.
Eleven staff members from the Village Bakery are lacing up their running shoes this year. Florence Corfield, a seasoned fell runner, is excited to participate for the fifth time.
Then there’s Katie Roberts, who just started running a year ago. She’s feeling the excitement but admits that this half marathon is a big challenge for her.
Tom Breeze, a bakery manager, loves having a goal to work towards. He’s thrilled that so many colleagues are joining in this year and hopes to have even more next year for the 30th anniversary.
Robin Jones, the CEO of Village Bakery, expressed pride in their long-standing sponsorship. The event means a lot to them, especially since it started with Peter Norman’s idea.
They’re all looking forward to making the 30th anniversary next year a memorable celebration!
