Education Scotland inspectors commend Yester Primary School for its learning environment and student achievements, noting areas for improvement.
The report highlighted changes in the school’s leadership. The headteacher is currently seconded to another school. Stewart Brown has been the acting headteacher since September 2024.
The school earned a ‘satisfactory’ rating for learning, teaching, and assessment. Inspectors praised the classroom environments and the strong connections between parents and teachers. They also noted the friendly relationships staff have with students.
However, inspectors pointed out that many lessons are too teacher-led. They mentioned that teachers’ written feedback needs to improve in quality. A review of these practices is recommended for both teachers and senior leadership.
Inspectors acknowledged that teachers are using moderation and planning effectively. However, they suggested that teachers should plan more clearly for different student groups.
In the raising attainment and achievement category, the school received a ‘good’ rating. Most children met expected attainment levels in P1, P4, and P7. The quality of learning was praised, with a variety of activities offered both in school and the community.
Attendance is above the national average, and children’s achievements are celebrated in various ways. Inspectors highlighted strengths in numeracy, listening, and talking skills, with positive feedback on writing.
They noted that at the second level, children need to enhance their vocabulary and language skills to engage readers better.
An East Lothian Council spokesperson expressed pride in the recognition from Education Scotland. They highlighted the confident and articulate children and the calm, inclusive environment created by staff.
The spokesperson added that children are making good progress in literacy, numeracy, and feel happy at school. Inspectors also noted leadership opportunities for children through lunchtime clubs and positions within the school.
The school team will work on the recommendations and use data to plan high-quality learning experiences that meet children’s needs.
