Visitor numbers surged by 7% this year, but many found it too crowded
York: The Christmas Market saw a 7% increase in visitors this year. Over 1.2 million people visited Parliament Street during the event.
According to a report, the market did well financially. It helped York become a top winter destination in the UK.
However, 31% of visitors felt it was too busy. More than 20% suggested spreading out the market for better access.
Cllr Kate Ravilious from the City of York Council is open to changes for 2025. This follows concerns about safety and access for disabled visitors.
Make It York reviews the market layout each year. They aim to address overcrowding and improve visitor experience.
A survey of 103 visitors showed an average satisfaction rating of three out of five. Half were satisfied, while 40% were not.
Many visitors plan to return this winter. Over 75% had attended previous Christmas Markets in York.
Most visitors came to the city center partly or solely for the market. Suggestions for improvement included reducing overcrowding and spreading out stalls.
Some visitors wanted more variety in stalls and additional seating. Others suggested lowering prices and improving access.
About 20% felt the market was better than last year, while 55% were neutral. Three-quarters agreed the market is important for York.
Many enjoyed the festive atmosphere and variety of products. Half of the visitors traveled by car, while others walked or took public transport.
Of those who drove, 36% parked in city center lots. A third of visitors were from York, with many others from Yorkshire and beyond.
Thirteen complaints were made about the market, including issues with seating and access. Despite this, the market helped York rank as the UK’s third most festive city.
The increase in visitors is partly due to better tracking methods. Overall, the market’s success aligns with more visitors to York.
