Zara Saghir’s artwork, inspired by Islamabad, wins the 2025 Blackburn Art Open, now part of the museum’s collection
Blackburn: Exciting news from the art scene! Zara Saghir has just been announced as the winner of the 2025 Blackburn Art Open. Her piece, I Am Mrs Khan, is now part of the Blackburn Museum’s collection.
Zara’s work is a fresh take on a traditional Islamabad poster that offers matchmaking services. She’s really put her spin on it, blending her cultural roots with a modern twist.
In her own words, Zara describes the piece as a way to challenge gender roles. She’s photographed in a suit paired with Pakistani bridal jewelry, showcasing her pride in both her cultures.
She explains, “I am both the fixer and the fixed,” taking charge of her own narrative and redefining what it means to be Mrs Khan.
The project was supported by in-situ, Pendle, and Art of Small Talk, Pakistan, which is pretty cool. A spokesperson from Super Slow Way congratulated Zara, highlighting her talent as both an artist and a producer.
Interestingly, Zara created this piece during a residency in Islamabad, collaborating with local artists. It’s great to see such creativity being recognized!
Another artist, Janet Howkins, received high praise for her piece Sunflowers, which is a modern twist on Van Gogh’s famous work. She was thrilled to be acknowledged among the talented artists in the show.
The exhibition opened on January 18 and attracted over 600 visitors. It runs until January 31, showcasing a mix of amateur and professional artists from the area.
