A young driver was spared a ban after speeding on the Newtown Bypass, receiving five penalty points instead
Newtown: Harry Walker, a 19-year-old, was driving a work van last July when he thought the bypass was a 70mph road. Turns out, it was a 60mph limit. Oops!
At Welshpool Magistrates’ Court, they learned he should’ve been going 10mph slower. He was close to losing his license but ended up with just five points instead of six, which would’ve meant an automatic ban.
His solicitor, Owain Jones, explained that Harry wasn’t familiar with the area. He’s a young guy who made a mistake and feels really sorry about it. He even wrote a letter to express his remorse.
Harry’s a polite, well-mannered lad who’s never been in trouble before. He works in sales and sometimes helps out with deliveries. Losing his license would be a big deal for him and his job.
The magistrates decided to give him five points and a £346 fine after he admitted to speeding. Chair Sarah Sargent reminded him that there’s no excuse for speeding, especially as a new driver.
She acknowledged his remorse and said he needs to be careful for the next few years. His insurance will take a hit too, but at least he can still drive. Harry promised it won’t happen again as he left the court.
